Water damaged ceilings – Water damaged ceilings are often characterised by a brown discoloration on the surface of the ceiling. Water from leaky pipes or a leaky roof can make its way down to your property’s ceiling causing it to become waterlogged and drip onto the floor.
The excessive moisture can lead to mold growth, potentially leading to serious health issues. Furthermore, water can weaken the structural integrity of the ceiling posing a safety risk to all occupants within the home.
Dropped ceilings, also known as suspended ceilings, floating ceilings, or false ceilings are an additional ceiling suspended or fixed beneath the original or structural ceiling.
There are many reasons why a homeowner may opt to construct a false ceiling. Sound proofing (think noisy neighbours in apartments), improved acoustics (home theatres), hiding utilities such as wires and pipes, increased heating/cooling efficiency (especially for high ceiling properties), and aesthetic appeal, are among the many reasons. why you might opt to build a false ceiling.
This is another common ceiling ailment which requires fixing. There are numerous possible causes of a sagging plasterboard ceiling. Sometimes it can be an indicator of a serious underlying issue such as structural movement in the building, the presence of termites, or leaks/water damage.
Bulkheads can be commonly constructed to conceal air conditioning units, structural beams or utilities such as pipes, vents and electrical wires.
Repairing water damaged wall or ceiling plaster can be tricky because we may need to replace more than just the part that is bulging out. Gyprock soaks up water like a sponge and may not be as strong once it dries out. So for water damaged ceilings we need to also replace the area around the bulging part, to prevent it falling on someone in the future.
It may be necessary to use a moisture reader to check whether there’s any moisture left in the plaster surrounding the hole to be replaced. If there is, we need to wait a few days for it to dry completely, to prevent the new plaster reacting with the moist plaster.
There are many different reasons that plaster walls can bulge including:
The first step of repairing any damaged plaster is to acertain whether it is 10mm, 13mm or 16mm thick. These days most plaster is 10mm thick (especially ceilings), and 16mm is usually only used when fire resistance or sound-proofing is needed. At Best Sydney Plasterer our Gyprockers are able to install all types of plaster / gyprock, including the 1-hour fire rated type.
